Der Porsche 911, kurz auch „Neunelfer“, oder nur „Elfer“ genannt, ist der bekannteste Sportwagen von Porsche und gilt als Inbegriff dieser Marke.Er wurde am 12. September 1963 auf der IAA in Frankfurt am Main als Nachfolger des Porsche 356 mit der Bezeichnung Porsche 901 vorgestellt. Dreistellige Zahlen mit einer Null in der Mitte waren jedoch für Peugeot als Typbezeichnung geschützt, sodass der Wagen im Jahr 1964 als Porsche 911 auf den Markt kam. Der Wagen ist ein typischer 2+2-Sitzer mit zwei Sitzen und zwei Notsitzen. Angetrieben wird er von einem Sechs-Zylinder-Boxermotor im Heck des Wagens. Diese Art des Heckmotors hatten auch klassische Fahrzeuge wie der VW Käfer oder der Porsche 356. Der Porsche 911 hat in der Regel einen Heckantrieb (Carrera); seit 1989 werden auch Fahrzeuge mit Allradantrieb (Carrera 4) angeboten. Spitzenmodell ist seit 1974 der mit einem Turbomotor ausgestattete 911 Turbo. Seit 1995 wurde darüber hinaus der 911 GT2, eine gewichtsoptimierte und leistungsgesteigerte Version des 911 Turbo, in einer Kleinserie produziert.Karosserievarianten des Porsche 911 sind das Coupé, das Cabriolet und der Targa. In den Jahren von 1989 bis 1993 und 2010 wurde zusätzlich eine als Speedster bezeichnete Roadster-ähnliche Variante in Kleinserie produziert. Dieser Name geht auf die im September 1954 erschienene Version des Porsche 356 mit flacher Windschutzscheibe, Steckscheiben in den Türen, Schalensitzen und voll versenkbarem Verdeck zurück.Der Porsche 911 und seine Ableger wie etwa die Modelle Porsche 934 und 935 wurden in der Vergangenheit erfolgreich als Rennwagen in der Sportwagen-Weltmeisterschaft und der Deutschen Rennsport-Meisterschaft eingesetzt. Heute sind Rennwagen auf 911er-Basis hauptsächlich in Markenpokalen wie dem Carrera Cup im Einsatz.

Throughout its lifetime, the 911 has been modified by private teams and by the factory itself for racing, rallying and other forms of automotive competition. It is among the most successful competition cars ever. In the mid-1970s, naturally aspirated 911 Carrera RSRs won major world championship sports car races such as Targa Florio, Daytona, Sebring and Nürburgring, even against prototypes. The 911-derived 935 turbo also won the coveted 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1979. In the 1999 international poll for the award of Car of the Century, the 911 came fifth.It is one of two in the top five that had remained continuously in production (the original Beetle remained in production until 2003),and was until 1998 the most successful surviving application of the air- (now water-) cooled opposed rear-engine layout pioneered by its original ancestor, the Volkswagen Beetle. It is one of the oldest sports coupe nameplates still in production, and 820,000 had been sold by the car's 50th anniversary in 2013.
