Der M1 Abrams ist seit den 1980er-Jahren ein Kampfpanzer (englisch main battle tank, MBT) der United States Army und des United States Marine Corps. Der M1 ersetzte den veralteten M60. Das erste Serienexemplar des M1 wurde am 28. Februar 1980 ausgeliefert.Er bildet das Rückgrat der Panzertruppen der USA, Ägyptens, Saudi-Arabiens, Kuwaits und Australiens. Bis heute wurden in den USA und Ägypten über 9000 Exemplare gebaut.Der M1 wurde mehrfach Kampfwertsteigerungen unterzogen, um ihn technologisch auf dem neuesten Stand zu halten und der seit seiner Einführung geänderten Bedrohungslage anzupassen. Er ist nach dem früheren Chief of Staff of the Army, General Creighton W. Abrams, benannt. Der Stückpreis für einen M1A2 betrug 1999 etwa 6,2 Millionen US-Dollar.Seit 1984 ist der Panzer mit einer in den USA in Lizenz gefertigten 120-mm-Glattrohrkanone von Rheinmetall bestückt.

It is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Army Chief of Staff and Commander of US military forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972.The M1 Abrams entered U.S. service in 1980, replacing the M60 tank.It served for over a decade alongside the improved M60A3, which had entered service in 1978. The M1 remains the principal main battle tank of the United States Army and Marine Corps, and the armies of Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Australia.Three main versions of the M1 Abrams have been deployed, the M1, M1A1, and M1A2, incorporating improved armament, protection and electronics. These improvements, as well as periodic upgrades to older tanks, have allowed this long-serving vehicle to remain in front-line service. The M1A3 is currently under development.
